RESEARCH

The “Dirty Dozen”: Research began with fruits and vegetables most commonly exposed to pesticide residues, such as strawberriries, spinach, grapes, and apples.

Natural Chemistry: Studies show that baking soda and vinegar are powerful, safe agents for removing bacteria and pesticides.

Trade-Offs

The original concept envisioned a floating pod that cleaned produce directly in a sink filled with water using a dissolving pod and gentle motion. However, this approach came with several trade-offs that affected control, efficiency, and user experience.

Trade-Off 1

The floating pod was visually interesting but felt like a gadget. Shifting to an appliance form made it fit naturally into daily kitchen habits, blending with familiar products like dishwashers, blenders, and etc.

Trade-Off 2

The first concept required filling the entire sink with water, functional but inefficient and difficult to control.

Trade-Off 3

An open sink offers flexibility but can lead to uncertainty. You might not be able to see when the cleaning cycle is complete. The countertop design guides users with a clear structure and visual feedback.

Throughout this project, I learned that a thoughtful design can make a tedious task feel easy, calming, and worth doing every day.
